Stone-Effect Finish & Patterns
Bourton Porcelain Paving has a subtle and light ripple-textured surface akin to the light riven finish one finds on natural limestone paving. This gives these slabs a beautiful tactile feel that wonderfully mimics natural stone and provides relief on the surface that catches the light, enhancing the stone-effect.
The design on these slabs also mimics natural stone, using light colour variation to appear like clastic structures found in many natural stones such as quartzite and limestone. There are also hints of bedding plane patterns and striations to enhance the natural geological appearance one sees in stone.
Outdoor Garden Tiles
Porcelain paving is specifically designed for outdoor use and has an R11 anti-slip rating, meaning it generally has better slip-resistance than natural stone or concrete paving products. Porcelain paving is also waterproof and non-porous, so dirt, grime and stains cannot penetrate the paving and can be easily washed off. Likewise, moisture and chemical solutions cannot penetrate the material, so frost damage and chemical erosion within the structure of the material do not occur.
These porcelain slabs can be used for a range of garden hard landscaping applications, as paving, coping and seating:
Garden Patio / Terrace Paving – These slabs are ideal for patio paving and creating different paved terraces in gardens with elevation. For patios and terraces, consider both stretcher bond and stack bond laying patterns to suit your garden style.
Pathways / Stepping Stones – These slabs are ideal for garden paths and to create stepping stones routes through the garden. Their smaller format means they can be more easily manipulated to the topography of your garden when creating a path.
Steps – Where you have changes in elevation, and you want to link your paved terraces/patios, then these slabs can be used to create your steps. You made need to cut them down depending on the depth of your treads.
Coping – These slabs can be laid on top of retaining walls, low walls, half-walls, parapets, dwarf walls, pony walls and knee walls as coping. This will often also create seating around the garden. In higher walls, consider a rebate or nook using a slab to create an alcove/recess seat.
Porcelain Paving vs Natural Stone Paving
Porcelain paving ticks all the boxes. The material quality, improved performance characteristics, extended longevity, and lower maintenance/upkeep of porcelain paving significantly lowers lifetime-costs for any garden patio paving when compared to natural stone or concrete paving.
Porcelain will outlive all other types of stone, which will save you money in the long run; especially as typically, the slabs only account for 20-30% of the initial cost of laying a new patio installation. If kept well maintained, your porcelain patio will still look brand new in 10 years time. You simply can’t put a price on slabs of this quality when looking at the long-term (10 years plus) solution for your garden. Because porcelain exterior tiles are vitrified (glass-like) and the material is a solid homogeneous slab, it is waterproof and impervious. This means that dirt and grime, algae and lichen cannot penetrate and get in the material of these paving slabs. This makes keeping them clean and maintaining them much easier. Simply brush off leaves and detritus and wash with warm soapy water.
